Hybrid veneers stand as an alternative to composite and porcelain veneers, offering a cost-effective, faster, and less invasive solution than traditional porcelain veneers. Much like porcelain veneers, they effectively enhance smiles marred by crookedness, staining, wear, or gaps.

A hybrid veneer can fix…

Crooked teeth

In most cases, orthodontic straightening is the best way to correct crooked teeth. However, many people prefer not to undergo this process. This is where veneers excel. They are especially beneficial if your teeth are also misshapen or discolored.

Worn teeth

Worn teeth can lead to a loss of a youthful appearance. A youthful smile typically features rounded teeth with edges that don’t form a perfectly straight line.

Thin enamel

Over time, acidic erosion or aggressive tooth brushing can wear away the shiny white enamel on your teeth, causing them to appear dull and darkened. Hybrid veneers offer an ideal solution because they don’t require additional tooth preparation, preserving your natural tooth structure. They can restore the teeth’s natural beauty and provide protection against further structural loss.

Gappy teeth

Orthodontic treatment may not always correct gaps between teeth, especially if your teeth are naturally smaller than the available space in your jaw. Hybrid veneers provide a swift and cost-effective solution to fill these gaps, offering a seamless and aesthetic result.

Heavily discoloured teeth

When certain teeth are resistant to bleaching, covering the darkened surfaces becomes necessary. In cases where discolouration is deeply rooted and a thin hybrid veneer may not fully mask the underlying colour, a crown may be the most effective solution.

Composite veneers can quickly change the appearance of a crooked or mishapen tooth

Digital Smile Design (DSD)

The Digital Smile Design (DSD) Process: Beautiful and Predictable Results

Designing a new smile can be challenging due to communication barriers. Understanding what you dislike about your current smile, envisioning your desired outcome, and translating this vision into reality by applying hybrid ceramic directly onto your teeth are crucial steps. The final result must harmonize with your facial features and personality.

The DSD protocol removes all guesswork from this process, ensuring precise and predictable outcomes.

Digital smile design

Benefits of the DSD Process:

  1. Clear Communication: We identify your concerns and goals for your smile.
  2. Real-Time Visualization: Using advanced technology, we create a digital mockup of your new smile, allowing you to see potential changes before any treatment begins.
  3. Precision and Harmony: The DSD protocol ensures that the final result complements your facial features and personality perfectly.

The standout parts of this process are:

Digital Mock-up.

With high-resolution photos and videos taken in our Digital Image Studio, we can create a realistic digital simulation of your perfect smile in real time. During a detailed consultation, you can preview this on the screen and provide input to further refine the design.

3-D Production Guide.

Your digitally 3-D CAD-designed smile is transferred onto a printed model of your mouth. This model produces 3-D silicone guides, allowing us to place quick-setting tooth-colored resin directly onto your teeth. Within minutes, you’ll see exactly what we’ve planned. After capturing images of your “trial smile,” we’ll review and refine the design together, ensuring you achieve a beautiful and predictable result.

FAQ

What do hybrid veneers cost?

By incorporating careful planning and teeth whitening, it’s possible to achieve excellent results without the need for a veneer on every tooth surface. For some teeth, composite bonding may suffice, starting at $220 per tooth and ranging up to $920 for a full hybrid veneer. This makes Hybrid veneers notably more affordable than porcelain veneers.

There may be some additional costs incurred before composite veneer preparation can begin. These will be discussed with you before being carried out and may include:

X-Rays.

If there is any hint of previous nerve damage or a previous Root Canal Treatment (RCT), it would be prudent to check that there is no underlying persisting infection. Such an infection is often present in the absence of pain.

3-D Production Guide.

If you chose to go beyond the Digital mock-up stage of treatment, your models might have wax added to them determined by your digital smile design prescription. We commonly use a ‘wax-up’ for more complex cases, and it incurs a cost of $65 per tooth. If you proceed with the veneers, we deduct this fee from the final price of your veneers.

How many teeth should I veneer?

It’s advisable to place hybrid veneers on the teeth prominently visible when you smile. This typically includes the front six, but for a more balanced appearance, veneering the front eight to ten teeth is becoming increasingly popular.

How long do hybrid veneers last?

Hybrid veneers, being a newer material, boast considerable durability, typically lasting 8-10 years. However, their longevity may vary if subjected to trauma or decay. While the hybrid ceramic material is robust, factors like tooth and gum health contribute significantly to their lifespan, with early failure often stemming from other issues rather than material failure itself.

Are Hybrid Veneers as good as Porcelain Veneers?

Hybrid veneers stand out for their affordability and speedy placement, yet they fall short in two critical aspects when compared to porcelain veneers:

1. Aesthetic Appeal: While hybrid ceramic advancements have come a long way, they still don’t quite match the exquisite beauty of highly polished and glazed porcelain. However, they are closer to achieving this level of beauty compared to composite resin veneers.

2. Longevity: Hybrid ceramic veneers’ surface, while highly polished, may wear slightly over time, leading to a matte appearance. This wear depends on dietary and maintenance habits. In contrast, porcelain veneers are glazed and maintain their color indefinitely while being highly resistant to wear. Additionally, porcelain’s strength surpasses that of hybrid materials.

How much of my tooth will be removed?

Hybrid veneers usually require minimal to no removal of tooth structure before placement. Any existing resin fillings are removed and integrated into the veneer restoration, as bonding new resin to old resin is not a reliable or viable option.

Will my veneers stain over time?

Hybrid veneers may develop stains over time due to dietary and oral hygiene factors. While initial stains can be polished off professionally, the thin nature of veneers limits the extent of stain removal.

What are the risks of composite veneers?

When planned and executed correctly, the risks associated with hybrid veneers are minimal. However, individuals with heavy bites, especially due to nighttime grinding, may face a higher risk of fracture. To mitigate this risk, we can provide a night guard for use during sleep. In some cases, porcelain crowns might be a preferable alternative to address this concern effectively.

If my upper teeth are treated, will they match the lowers?

In general, people tend to display their upper teeth more than their lower teeth when smiling. This is why hybrid veneers are predominantly placed on the upper teeth.

If your lower teeth are visible when you smile and they are also crooked, we can discuss the option of placing hybrid veneers there. However, many individuals choose to whiten their lower teeth to achieve a harmonious match with their upper teeth.

We often recommend teeth whitening before veneer placement so that we can match the veneers to the final whitening result. This simultaneous whitening process allows for a lighter shade and enables us to place thinner and more conservative veneers.

Will there be pain after treatment?

Discomfort following hybrid veneer treatment is typically minimal.

During the preparation and bonding stages, careful attention is paid to the surrounding gum tissue. While some individuals may experience mild discomfort in this area for a day or two after the procedure due to the tissue being lightly pushed aside, this is generally temporary.

In rare cases, slight tenderness in a tooth may occur if the bite feels slightly heavy after bonding. However, this issue can be easily resolved with a quick adjustment to the bite as needed.

Are composite veneers more readily repaired than porcelain veneers?

One significant advantage of hybrid veneers compared to porcelain is their repairability. If hybrid veneers fracture, they can be easily repaired by adding resin. While both porcelain and hybrid ceramic can be repaired using different materials and techniques, the predictability of repairs for porcelain may be slightly less reliable.

    Maintenance of hybrid veneers

Maintaining your Hybrid Veneers is straightforward. When properly fitted and bonded, the junction between the tooth and veneer is virtually seamless. Follow these simple steps to keep your veneers in excellent condition:

    • Brushing: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with regular fluoride toothpaste. Ensure the toothpaste is not too coarse or abrasive; it should feel smooth between your fingertips.
    • Flossing: Floss daily between your veneers, carefully reaching up to where the tooth meets the gums.
    • Bite Check: If your bite feels heavy on any of your new veneers, please inform us immediately.
    • Avoid Hard Foods: Do not bite on anything hard and brittle. Avoid chewing items that you wouldn’t chew with your natural teeth, such as bones, ice, fingernails, olive pits, and popcorn kernels.
    • Night Guard: If you grind or clench your teeth while sleeping, we recommend wearing a night guard to minimize stress on all your teeth. Also, be cautious of placing high stresses on your teeth during strenuous exercise.

About one to two weeks after your hybrid veneers are permanently bonded, we would like you to return to our practice for a follow-up. We’ll evaluate the gum response and address any questions you may have.
